Brookgreen Gardens

 

In 1931, long before Myrtle Beach was a Myrtle Beach Hotels and condos development,Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, founded Brookgreen Gardens, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, to preserve the native flora and fauna of the lowcountry and offer works of art and sculpture within that natural setting, South Carolina setting. The Huntingtons first visited what is today Brookgreen Gardens in 1929. The Huntington were wealthy Industrialist from the North, who had purchased the Plantation as a second home and a South Carolina escape in the Winter months.

Today, Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark with one of the most significant collections of figurative sculpture by American artists in the world and has the only zoo accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association on the coast of the Carolinas. Within its more than 9,000 acres are the Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve, the Huntington Sculpture Garden and the Center for American Sculpture.
